The Cartwheel Penny – The first coins exported to the Australian Colonies

‘The 2019 Empire Collection’
The story of the British Empire told through a collection of noteworthy coins’

The vast British Empire of the nineteenth century was built by an unprecedented period of international trade dominated by the British, which would ultimately reach all six inhabited continents. One of four coins available individually is The 2019 Cartwheel Penny gold proof coin.

Featuring a seated Britannia, surrounded by the incuse letters CARTWHEEL PENNY in engraved in to the edge, this beautiful £2 gold proof coin is symbolic of the original 1797 Penny struck by Matthew Boulton’s Soho mint.

The Cartwheel Penny – The first coins exported to the Australian Colonies

George III one-penny coins were referred to as “Cartwheel pennies”. These were the first British coins to be officially exported to the Australian colonies, and so can be considered Australia’s first official coinage. Dated 1797 and 1799, they were minted to relieve a chronic copper coin shortage and were the very first British coins minted by Matthew Boulton’s famous steam-powered coining press.

Bolton, the son of a Birmingham metal product manufacturer, had built the ground-breaking steam-powered Soho Mint in 1788. As well as medals and tokens, he produced high-quality coins from copper and silver for which he has been described as the founder of modern coinage

The famous cartwheel penny was to become the first coin to be exported to the British Australian colony. “Near four tons” of 1797-dated pennies arrived aboard the Porpoise, which docked in Port Jackson in 1800 to relieve cash-strapped New South Wales. It occupies an important place in Australian numismatic history as the first coin formally exported to New South Wales, and is also regarded as Australia’s first official coin.
